New Zealand Travellers Continue to Choose Japan as Demand Grows More Than 40% Year-on-Year
Japan’s popularity among New Zealand travellers continues to strengthen, with new data revealing significant growth in bookings, room nights and traveller demand over the past financial year.
Destination Japan data for the period 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026 shows gross bookings increased 41% year-on-year, while room nights grew 33%, highlighting Japan’s ongoing appeal as a preferred destination for Kiwi travellers.
The strongest travel demand was recorded during the northern summer period, with July and August among the busiest months of the year. Interest remained strong throughout the year, supported by Japan’s diverse seasonal experiences, from skiing and snow holidays to cultural, culinary and nature-based travel.
New Zealand travellers are also planning further ahead, with average booking lead times increasing 13% year-on-year, demonstrating continued confidence in Japan as a holiday destination.
“Japan continues to resonate strongly with New Zealand travellers, with demand growing across multiple seasons and travel styles,” said Jo Rendall, Business Leader at Infinity.
“We’re seeing more travellers planning ahead and seeking experiences that extend beyond the traditional peak periods, reflecting Japan’s growing appeal as a year-round destination.”
With strong growth in both visitation and booking performance, the results reinforce Japan’s position as one of the most sought-after international destinations for New Zealand travellers.
